PROJECT + PROCESS
PROJECT: Create a cash back app experience that takes a user less than 5 taps to complete a purchase.
TIMELINE: Project kick-off December 2018, Targeted launch May 2019.
Working under a tight timeframe and with limited resources we brought in the help of a small 2-man agency known for app development. The Slide team and myself worked tirelessly with them over 2 months to create initial wires and to perform user tests on various flows as well as some initial branding concepts. After the basic framework was designed we needed to complete the branding and finish building out the app.
MY ROLE
I was handpicked to join the Slide team to provide creative direction while crafting an end-to-end experience. I focused on wireframes, flows, prototypes, branding, design systems, illustration, UI, marketing campaigns and video production.
RESEARCH
With the basic framework created and simplicity in mind, I began compiling a competitor analysis across like-minded cash back, discount and financial apps to identify patterns and catalogue their offerings to users. Here’s what I found:
Keep it simple - Most apps used one color to highlight the most important and relevant information
Use illustration - Illustration helps to explain complex ideas and bring authenticity to light interfaces
Simple Hierarchy - Use one font to reduce clutter and create clear hierarchy
Use repetition - Create a component based design system that allows for visual patterns to emerge throughout the app

Initial branding concepts for Slide before it was called “Slide”.
CONCEPTS
Before Slide was actually “Slide” there were several concept boards that I created for consideration. You can see some of my initial concepts above. In order to create these I researched other products in our space as well as current and upcoming trends for UI/UX, color, illustration and visual design to ensure that the branding created would scale with our product from app launch to future marketing assets.

Final MVP branding for Slide.

DESIGN SYSTEM AND BRANDING
After choosing the visual direction, I began creating a design system that streamlined communication between myself and the developers. The system involved logos, typography, color palette and basic UI components for buttons, controls, lists, icons, alerts… etc.

MVP v1.0
Initial concepts for Slide began in late 2019 and the MVP version of the app launched in July 2020.
