PROBLEM

How do we create a low friction cash back app?

MY ROLE // Product Designer + Creative Director
User research, product strategy, stakeholder alignment, information architecture, user flows, visual design, interaction design, copywriting, quality assurance, branding, marketing materials, illustration, design system.

KICKOFF + DISCOVERY

Working under a tight timeframe and with limited resources we brought in the help of a small 2-man agency known for app development. The Slide team and myself worked tirelessly over a 2 month period to create initial wires, perform user tests, and ideate on branding concepts. In collaboration with the agency, we had the foundational flow to our cash back app. Next steps were to finalize MLP features, define branding and launch plans as well as build out the remainder of the app.

EARLY INSIGHTS

With the basic framework created and simplicity in mind, I began a competitor analysis across like-minded cash back, discount and financial apps to identify patterns and features. Here’s what I found:

Keep it simple - Most apps used one color to highlight the most important and relevant information

Illustrate It - Illustration helps to explain complex ideas and bring authenticity to light interfaces

Typography + Hierarchy - Use one font to reduce clutter and create clear hierarchy

Repetition - Create a component based design system that allows for visual patterns to emerge throughout the app

DESIGN + DEVELOPMENT

I created several concept boards for consideration. In order to create these I researched other products in our space as well as current and upcoming trends for UI/UX, color, illustration and visual design to ensure that the branding created would scale with our product from app launch to future marketing assets. While partnering with my product manager and executive leadership team we chose a simple, clean and impactful design.

DESIGN SYSTEM + BRANDING

After executive leadership and product were aligned on the visual direction, I began creating a design system that streamlined communication between myself and the developers. The system involved logos, typography, color palette and basic UI components for buttons, controls, lists, icons, alerts… etc.
